A journey into the musical world of Jean-Sigismond Cousser, inspired by his remarkable Commonplace Book.
As they celebrate their 30th anniversary, Les Muffatti present Under the Cover, their 11th album, out on 30 October 2026 on the Ramée / Outhere Music label.
Composer and travelling musician Jean-Sigismond Cousser (1660–1727) journeyed across Europe, from Stuttgart to Hamburg, before pursuing his career in Dublin. At the heart of the album lies his Commonplace Book, a personal notebook containing reflections on music, instruments and performance practice, alongside recipes, remedies and references to more than a thousand musical works.
Drawing on this remarkable source, Les Muffatti explore the musical landscape of Europe at the turn of the eighteenth century. The album brings together works by Lully, Steffani, Motta, Handel and Purcell, all mentioned in the notebook, alongside two compositions by Cousser himself: An Idylle on the Peace and Apollon Enjoüé.
With Under the Cover, the ensemble invites listeners to rediscover a composer celebrated in his own time but relatively overlooked today, and the musical connections that shaped Baroque Europe.
Under the Cover is out on 30 October 2026 on the Ramée / Outhere Music label.
